Brian was born and raised in the small country town of Benalla, in south-eastern Australia. A middle child in a large Catholic family, his early childhood years were spent without trimmings against the backdrop of World War II. A strong scholar, he first studied surveying at university, later also qualifying as a civil engineer.
Before transitioning to retirement, Brian spent several decades in business and raising his own large brood. Accounts of his practical pursuits, daily tennis and travel experiences fill numerous personal journals (in microscopic and impeccable hand) and attest to his keen observation of people, places and events.
Perhaps an unintended apprenticeship of sorts, after years of journal writing Brian was drawn to creative writing. As his writing reveals, Brian is an acute on-looker and, among other subjects, he enjoys portraying the quirks of small town personalities and their everyday interactions. No dream or interest is too small for his aspiring characters. Brian’s subtle humour is often dry, sometimes dark, but is always matched by a compassion that exhibits his genuine underlying connection with his subjects – whether man, woman, or beast.
